Vintage Design
I purchased it long time ago (before Google) in Milan at an auction. It came from a family who didn’t know much about it other then that it has been part of the family for as long as they could remember. The other thing they could tell is that the grandfather was a furniture maker at the early days of Cassina which was founded in 1927 in a place called Meda (near to Milan).
The table is made ± 1920 – 1925
Mackintosh won the Alexander Thomson Travelling Studentship which enabled young architects to make a three-month tour to study Ancient Classical Architecture. Mackintosh’s chosen tour of Italy is one of the best-documented periods of his career in terms of primary sources as he kept a diary which forms the basis of the book’s narrative. CRM landed at Naples on 5th April 1891 and after a week there and a brief visit to Sicily he worked his way up Italy, ending his tour at Pavia that July.
In this sense it is not quite remarkable a table like this was found in a small town in Italy, near to Milan. Maybe the young Mackintosh had shown some pictures to the early woodwork place? One can not say. However it’s not coïncedental that the table was standing in Italy, Milan.
History of the table:
The Hill House in Helensburgh is widely recognised as the most iconic home designed by Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Scotland’s most famous architect.
Commissioned in 1902 by a wealthy Glasgow-based publisher, Walter Blackie, the house was carefully designed by Mackintosh to accommodate the Blackie family and their lifestyle.
This table with a drawer is standing in the Hill House. This table that is displayed on Pamono.com is made without a drawer. It is not missing. It’s ment to be like this.
The table shows aging, restoring and some screws additing. Which is normal for such an old table.
The “Dovetail” which is applied on the downside of the table is a typical old technique of the furnituremakers from the early 20th century. It is to prevent warping of larger made wooden planks and to hold these parts together.
All together a fantastic piece of furniture with a great history.
