1 Fine British Nautical Seascape Work of Art Marine Oil Painting Cargo Ship City Of Liverpool. Subject side profile view facing right of the Ocean cargo ship City of Liverpool steaming along im the Mersey estuary. Smoke is coming out of the ships black & light brown funnel with Union Jack & other ensign flags shown on the aft. Also at the bow you can see the name of the ship. Superb attention to detail showing rigging lines. Siling along on choppy blue waters above with blue sky & large grey clouds around the horizon. Title of the oil painting is “City of Liverpool” by the artist Les Cowle. A nice size with the frame being 48.5 cm wide and 38.5 cm high. Medium oil on canvas. Signed by the known British artist Les Cowle. Provenance label verso. A fine example of his work. Cowle was born in Glasgow, he joined the Merchant Navy in 1950s as marine engineer. Sailed Blue Funnel, Brocklebanks, Ellerman Papayannis, Canadian Pacific. 2nd & chief engineer steamships and motorships: USA, India, Middle East, Burma, Ceylon.He grew up in Birkenhead, Merseyside. Served apprenticeship with Alfred Holt as marine engineer. On completion joined sea staff as 5th on Euryades 1952. He painted calendars, greetings cards, Xmas cards for the Blue Funnel Association. Ship biography.Name: City of Liverpool was a general cargo ship its build year was in 1970, its builder was Robb Caledon Dundee, Yard no. 544. LR/IMO no. 7014282. Its gross tonnage was 10013 tons and summer DWT 13488 tons, its IMO was 701428, its length 152 metres, breadth 22 metres, ,main engine: seven-cylinder, two-stroke, opposed-piston, Sunderland-built Doxford 76J7C of 17,500 bhp at 115 rpm, for a service speed of 18.25 knots. Owned by HLL Shipping Ltd and operated by Ellerman City Liners. 1981-sold to Diana Shipping Agencies SA, Athens, renamed MARIANTHE (Greek flag). 1986-to breakers at Kaohsiung, Taiwan, arrived 16/9. Sister vessels were: CITY OF HULL – from the same yard – and CITY OF LONDON from Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, Scotstoun. The latter had a different main engine to the Dundee-built pair: a six-cylinder, two-stroke, Barclay Curle-Sulzer 6RND90 of 17,400 bhp at 122 rpm. Was later renamed Matianthe its current status decommissioned or lost. Highly sought after due to the collectible nature of the marine subject matter.
