A large, colorful and hand decorated porcelain Chinese ginger jar with a warrior scene and an oatmeal crackle glaze. The warriors are riding horses and waving banners.

The ginger jar is heavy and thickly potted. The mouth and base are glazed in a deep brown color to approximate bronze.

There is a Chinese character mark on the base in a dark brown glaze. It’s very difficult to read but I believe the bottom word is “China”.

CONDITION

There are no cracks, chips or breaks other than a hole in the bottom that was drilled when the jar was lamped in 1956 (there is a note in the jar, from previous owner explaining this). The base has an added collar of plaster which has been colored to fit the jar. This was done to match another lamp height. There are typical kiln flaws, such as enamel spotting, pin hole reserves and black spots.

Offered is a Carder Steuben alabaster bowl, features flared rosaline rim, raised on a plum jade cast foot, unmarked (Many Steuben Vases were not marked but had a paper label that at times were lost…).

Provenance: San Francisco, California estate of Charles S. LaFollette (1929-2022) by descent, Charles D. LaFollette (1900-1982), a former vice president and a director emeritus of the Corning Glass Works.

Mr. LaFollette joined Corning in 1929. He was elected a director in 1946 and financial vice president in 1957. He retired in 1964 as honorary vice president and was elected director emeritus in 1970.

Mr. LaFollette was a trustee of the Corning Museum of Glass and the Corning Glass Works Foundation. He was also a director emeritus of the Dow Corning Corporation and served on the advisory board of the Salvation Army.

He graduated from Wabash College and the Graduate School of Business Administration at Harvard University, where he became assistant dean. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; two sons, Charles S. of Manhattan and Gerry C. of Indianapolis; a daughter, Elizabeth McInnis of Stamford, Conn., and nine grandchildren. About the maker: Steuben was founded in 1903 by Fredrick C. Carder and his partner Thomas G. Hawkes. Carder had been designing and producing glass in England for the firm of Stevens and Williams. Hawkes owned a large glass cutting factory in Corning, New York. Initially, the designers at Steuben followed styles that were popular at retailers such as Tiffany & Company, but the company took an artistic turn in the 1930s. In 1933, Steuben created a prismatic crystal formula that could capture, reflect and refract light unlike anything else in the world. During the Art Deco movement, Steuben became best known for its unique work in modernist clear glass.” (Dixie Art Colony Foundation)

Excellent Pre-Owned Condition.

Fabulously rustic and earthy branch and willow wall pocket, the perfect accent filled with faux (or live) blooms or English ivy. I picked this cutie up during one of our trips to the Ozarks, circa 1990. It was handcrafted by a local basket artisan using an assorted selection of willow rod species which is what gives the wall pocket its multi-dimensional spectrum of color, as seen in the photos. The frame is crafted from a twisted branch, while the “basket” itself is made from willow stakes and lashes in an over and under weave, finished in a weathered whitewash stain with a top coat of lacquer. It measures 20½” x 13” x 6” H/W/D; interior pocket 10½” x 7½” W/D; weight 1 lb. 2 oz. In excellent structural condition with age-appropriate wear. Since wood is an organic material, it shrinks across the grain with age and there is a slight crack at the bottom of the frame which does not affect the integrity or beauty of the wall pocket (see photo 8). Also note, because of its handcrafted nature, it is not 100% symmetrical in shape. An unpretentious beauty that will add a pop of rustic chic in any space!
